What Is a Registered Agent?
A Delaware Registered Agent accepts service of process, legal correspondence from the State of Delaware, and other legal notifications on behalf of a business entity. Registered agents are then required to send these notices to you, the business, right away.
Delaware Registered Agent Requirements:
Delaware law (8 DE Code § 131-132 and 6 DE Code § 18-104) requires registered agents to:
- Be a legal resident of Delaware
- Have a physical location in Delaware (a “registered office”) where they can, during normal business hours, accept service of process, legal notifications, and annual report notifications
- Provide reliable means to forward all documents received to the responsible parties
- Keep on file with the State the name, business address and business telephone number of a natural person who serves as the communications contact on behalf of a Delaware corporation or LLC
A Registered Agent, Inc prides itself on fast, secure, and inexpensive registered agent service in Delaware. Our registered agent service can meet all your business’s statutory requirements and more, all for just $29 a year.
Benefits of Our Local Delaware Registered Agent Service
The Cheapest Delaware Registered Agent
The word “cheap” gets a bad rap. But when you compare our price ($29/year) to our competitors ($100+/year), we’re literally the cheapest service out there. But that doesn’t mean we sacrifice on quality.
For one thing, we own our building here in Dover and we rent the extra space to clients and other businesses. Low overhead means we don’t have to charge high prices to cover rising rents or moving fees. Not only do we care about helping our customers keep costs low, owning our building gives you the same stability we’re able to enjoy. Unlike a lot of national services that rent space in Delaware and have to change location every now and then, we’re set where we are and we’re here to stay.

Not only do we provide professional Registered Agent Service for a fraction of the cost of our competitors, we provide address and mail services that give your business credibility and keep your personal information off the public record. Do I need a registered agent?
It depends on the type of business you own. Generally, if your business is required to register with the State of Delaware, you’ll need a registered agent. Sole proprietorships, for example do NOT need a registered agents. But the following business entities do:
- LLCs
- Corporations
- Nonprofit Corporations
- Partnerships
This list is not exhaustive.
What is a registered agent for a Delaware LLC?
Delaware LLCs and corporations have the same requirements when it comes to registered agents. Put simply: each entity type must have the name and contact information for a registered agent listed on its formation documents. This information must be up-to-date to ensure your business receives all important legal and state notifications.
Is a registered agent required in Delaware?
Every LLC and corporation in Delaware is required to appoint a registered agent on its certificate of formation or certificate of incorporation (8 DE Code § 131-132 and 6 DE Code § 18-104). This is true of every type of business entity required to register with the Delaware Division of Corporations, including:
- Limited Liability Companies (LLCs)
- Foreign LLCs
- Series LLCs
- Corporations
- Foreign Corporations
- Partnerships
- Limited Partnerships (LPs)
- Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
- Limited Liability Limited Partnerships (LLLPs)
Can I use myself as a registered agent?
You can be your own registered agent in Delaware, however you’ll want to proceed with caution for a couple big reasons:
- Availability. Registered agents are required to be available at their registered location during normal business hours. If you’re someone who travels often or isn’t around during regular business hours, you might miss an important document, which (depending on the document) could result in fines or further legal action.
- Privacy. If you work from home, what you’d save in costs by being your own registered agent you’d rack up in junk mail and other unsolicited letters. This is because, by being your own registered agent, you would have to put your own address on the public record, where anyone (including spammers and scammers) can access it.
Some people choose to appoint friends or relatives as their registered agent, however this poses the concerns listed above. For this reason, most businesses choose to go with a professional registered agent service, like ours. It’s just easier that way.
How much does it cost to have a registered agent in Delaware?
While you could appoint yourself or someone you know as your registered agent for free, it’s not recommended (see above). That then leaves you with the option of hiring a professional, like an accountant or a lawyer, which would cost you hundreds of dollars a year — or going with a professional registered agent service, like ours. Here’s how we stack up against the competition:
A Registered Agent, Inc. (Us):
Other Local RA Services:
National RA Services:
$29 / year
$39 – $59 / year
$119 – $300+ / year
The choice is clear. With local professionals right here in Dover who deliver fast service and are available to answer your questions by email or phone, our service definitely gives you the most bang for your buck.
How do I change my Delaware Registered Agent?
The easiest way to change your Delaware Registered Agent is to hire us for Registered Agent Service, then have us change your registered agent for you! Or, you can change your registered agent yourself by filing a Certificate of Amendment with the Delaware Division of Corporations.
See our page on How to Change Delaware Registered Agents for more information.
Can I use my registered agent as my business address in Delaware?
It depends who your registered agent is—not all services offer mail forwarding for your regular mail. With A Registered Agent, Inc., we automatically put our address on your formation documents so you can keep your own address private, and if you need to receive mail at a business address in Delaware, our Mail Forwarding Service gives you a unique suite number at our Dover address so you can start receiving physical mail here, too.
What if I don’t want Compliance Service?
If you forget to file your Annual Report & Franchise Tax (corporations) or pay your Annual Tax (LLCs), you’ll pay a hefty fee (starting at $200), which is why we automatically cover this for you for the low cost of $100. However, if you’d rather stay on top of your annual filings yourself, you can easily cancel this service. We send you reminders well before your compliance filing is due, so you have plenty of time to cancel and take care of your filings yourself.
